Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

PATENT No. 291,071, by Aktiebola

get Spontan, of Stockholm, is for certain detail improvements in the very interesting, automatic variable gear which was shown at the last 'Commercial Motor Show at Olympia and fully described in our columns. We have been anxiously expecting to hear more of this device, which, although somewhat complicated, impressed us very favourably when_ we had an opportunity for testing it on the road. The application is under the convention and is not yet accepted.

Pneumatic Filling for the Wells of Pneumatic Tyre Rims.

PATENT No. 294,192, by the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., and F. Fellowes, describes a means whereby the well of the rim for a _pneumatic tyre may be filled to prevent the inner tube from

extending into the well. The specification describes a special "flap," but in reality it appears to be a tube which can be inflated. It may easily be introduced while in an uninflated state, but can be blown up to the form shown in dotted lines. The " flap" extends all round the rim and is provided with a valve for inflation. The valve for the main air tube is arranged to be operated independently of the filler tube.

The Prevention of Fire Through Back-firing in the Carburetter.

WITH the development of the motor coach and especially the sleeping coach, we are glad to see attention being given to the prevention of fire caused through petrol becoming ignited, as even if its consequences be not serious, the effect on passengers is likely to be detrimental to the industry. Patent No. 294,403, by C. M. V. Allenou, of Nantes, France, describes a means by which any back-fire in the carburetter is confined to what petrol is in that part, as a fusible metal ring becomes instantly melted, allowing a valve to close the petrol-supply pipe.

We strongly recommend that all concerned in the motor-coach movement should give attention to this invention, also to patent No. 278,354, described in our issue dated August 14th.

A New Form of Electric Starter.

THE starter described in specification

No. 294,369, by IL L. Aspden, consists of an electric motor with a heavy flywheel mounted on the shaft between the engine and the gearbox, a free-wheel of the roller type being provided to allow the engine to revolve without taking the armature with it.

In use, the clutch is withdrawn and the gears put into neutral; the electric motor then gains speed and starts the engine when the clutch is inserted.
