PARCEL GIANT Yodel is to close approximately half of its depots across the country as well as axing a number of its eight strategic hubs, putting a signiicant number of jobs at risk.

CM can exclusively reveal that the parcel carrier will shut up to 60 depots from its network of 120 by the time the integration of Home Delivery Network (HDNL) and DHL Domestic is completed late next year.

Yodel, which is owned by billionaire businessmen Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay, can only guarantee that its hubs in Droitwich, Hatield, Shaw and Wednesbury will remain open.

The restructure conirms fears that the merger of the domestic B2B and B2C businesses of DHL Express (UK) and HDNL, announced in January 2010 (CM 7 January 2010), would inevitably lead to redundancies.

A Yodel spokesman says: “As outlined last year, Yodel is moving towards an integrated single operational platform that will allow it to operate effectively and proitably in a rapidly changing market. This is an ongoing project that we are undertaking gradually over a period of time. We are carrying out this process in a transparent manner and we will keep all Yodel colleagues and clients fully informed as our plans take shape.” Following HDNL’s acquisition of DHL Domestic, the combined company rebranded as Yodel, generating an amalgamated annual turnover of about £600m.

As part of the deal, approximately 4,700 people, ive hubs and 71 service centres moved over from DHL.
