Whatever your feelings about the Royals and whether UK plc should be saddled with a second consecutive four-day weekend, we’re accentuating the positive this week.

It’s very easy to get lost in all the doom-mongering: the rising price of fuel, the companies that continue to collapse, the lack of awareness of the impact of the next stage of London’s Low Emission Zone and the introduction of Euro-6, etc – the list of bad news goes on and on. But guess what: the industry goes on too. Through thick and thin, road transport continues to deliver the goods for UK plc. And this week we’re celebrating the Best of British by highlighting the great aspects of British transport.

We’ve sat down with Glyn Davies (see p14) to get the lowdown on a career that proves that to make a small fortune in transport you don’t have to start with a large one. We note with pride that trailer-making is one of the few manufacturing industries left in the UK and that the sector is in relatively rude health (see p48). And we’ve taken a spin round the Leyland Trucks factory (p46) and witnessed first-hand the pride the workers there take in producing DAFs. If you’re a DAF customer and you’ve never been, you really should arrange a trip – it’s worth it, if only to wonder how to instil that same level of pride within your own workforce.

Of course, in any celebration of Britain, there has to be some tongue-in-cheek anti-French sentiment: hence our booze cruise with a difference to Paris in a Union Flag liveried Renault Premium (p36). Vive le rosbif! Justin Stanton
