Co-op DC will transfer to ND

A 500,000ft2 multitemperature DC in Andover, Hampshire, authorised for 206 vehicles and 240 trailers, will transfer from an O-licence held by the Co-operative Group to one held by Norbert Dentressangle (ND).

In January, it was announced that ND had agreed a deal to run the food logistics operation for the Co-op for the next ive years. It followed a decision by the supermarket chain to outsource its transport operations.

However, the Co-op’s warehousing operation will continue to be managed by the retailer in-house.

ND will also provide a night service, which will see frozen products from the facility on the Andover Airield Business Park delivered to other Co-op food regional DCs. The Andover operating centre will serve more than 400 of the Co-op food stores in the south of England. It replaces the Co-op’s existing transport operation in nearby Fareham, which will shut this year.

The two irms are also looking for 1,000 people in the Hampshire area to ill a range of logistics roles. ND is looking for 300 drivers, while the retailer is looking to take on 550 warehouse employees and 150 admin staff to manage the DC.

Trevor Ashworth, director of food retail supply chain at the Co-op, says: “Our food business has grown signiicantly in recent years, so it was important for our logistics operation to develop accordingly.

“At this stage of the process we will have an eficient and modern logistics network that will relect the Co-op’s position as one of the UK’s ‘big-ive’ food retailers.”
