LAST YEAR was an excellent year for road building, Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley has said.

A combination of competitive prices and good weather had resulted in nine schemes scheduled for completion in 1984/85 being finished early, with a further eight ahead of schedule.

Nearly 100 miles of new motorway and trunk road were completed including the important A10-M11 section of the M25. "With a further 12.5 per cent increase in the funds available for national road construction, I look forward to an even better year in 1984/85."

Mr Ridley told MPs that the provisional figures showed that spending on motorways and trunk roads in England in 1983/84 had been less than OA of one per cent below the budgeted figure of £654.4m.
