Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN ingenious filter which both filters the engine oil and cleans it chemically, has been put on the market by Simmonds Aerocessories, Ltd., Great West Road, 13rentford, London, W. It is not an entirely new device, having been marketed, with considerable success, in America for two or three years, where thousands are already in use. The Simmonds concern has now been granted the nlanufacturing rights for this country and is selling it under the name of Simmonds Pram oil and engine cleaner.

Every vehicle user must realize the importance of clean oil, which not only ensures more efficient lubrication, but reduces the rate of wear on the bearings, pistons, piston rings and so on.

The Simmonds Frarn filter is quite easy to install, being bolted to the side of the engine or to the scuttle, and linked up in a by-pass circuit which can be taken from any point on the pressure side of the standard lubricating system..

It cleans mechanically and purifies chemically, the cartridge embodied comprising a tightly packed roll of straining material impregnated with a scientifically developed compound which is claimed to retain its chemical strength indefinitely.. All dirt, abrasives, sludge and heavy particles of B40

An Easily Installed Accessory Which Mechanically Cleans and Chemically Purifies the Crankcase Oil.

carbon, and similar foreign matter are filtered mechanically from the oil as it passes through the device. It is stated that the chemical treatment is such that fine particles of carbon, which would pass through any strainer, as well as partly oxidized particles of oil, acids and other chemical impurities also are removed.

Samples of oil taken from an engine sump before and after fitting this filter, were interesting. The first showed the oil to be heavily discoloured with sludge and impurities, almost to the state of being blackened. After 369 miles there was a considerable improvement. At the end of 1,500 miles the oil was restored almost to its original colour without, it is claimed, any loss in lubricating qualities_ The cartridge will remain effective for 6,000 to 10,000 miles, according to the condition of the oil and engine at the start; a renewal cartridge costs little.

The complete filter, for medium-sized engines, costs 37s. 6d., plus Ils, for fitting brackets (renewal cartridge I la), there being also a heavy-duty model for larger units at 87s. 6d: For small vans there is a Simmonds Frain cleaner available at 18s. 6d., plus Ils. for fittings, with reneikal cartridges at 5s. each.
