The New Minister Takes Over

HAVING been selected as the new Minister of Supply, Mr. Leslie Burgin hands over the reins at the Ministry of Transport to Captain David Euan Wallace, M.C., Conservative member for Hornsey, whose most recent official position was that of Financial Secretary to the Treasury, a post which has provided him with the stepping stone on which to tread to Cabinet rank.

After his distinguished career in the Army during the war, Captain Wallace served on the staff of the British Military Attaché at Washington and, later, as A.D.C. to the Governor-General of Canada. He first sat in Parliament in 1922, and has represented flornsey since 1924. After acting as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty and, later, to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, he became a Government Whip and a Junior Lord of the Treasury.

In 1931 Capt. Wallace was appointed Civil Lord of the Admiralty, and at short intervals served as Under-Secretary at the Home Office, Secretary to the Department of Overseas Trade, Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade and Financial Secretary to the Treasury.

Captain Wallace, who has just celebrated his 47th birthday, is a favourite in the House of Commons, where he has displayed considerable ability on the Front Bench. His birthplace was Dunblane, Scotland, and his wife is a daughter of Sir Edwin Lutyens. who collaborated in the preparation of the Bressey Report.
