After 14 years on UK and continental work one of F Edmondson & Sons’ first Mercedes-Benz Actros has finally been retired
Words: Will Shiers
F EDMONDSON & Sons has just retired one of its irst Mercedes-Benz Actros, after 14 years and more than a million kilometres.
The Morecambe-based operator bought the Actros 1840 from Blackburn Mercedes-Benz dealer Ciceley Commercials in 1998, just over a year after the model was launched in the UK. It began life as a 4x2 tractor unit and spent ive years working in Europe, collecting furniture from manufacturers for delivery to specialist retailers in the UK. It was then stretched into a drawbar rigid by chassis conversion specialist Wheelbase Engineering of Darwen, and continued on long-haul continental work for another four years. Since 2007, regular work has taken it only as far as Ireland.
Company chairman Garry Edmondson said: “The old girl is still going strong and it’s a great shame to see her inally retire. But we were offered a very fair trade-in price [against a two-year-old Actros 1836 drawbar] so decided the time was right to move her on.”
