Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• From the beginning of October Shell Oil will offer a new engine oil which it claims will reduce fuel consumption when used in high-mileage vehicles.

Shell Myrina X, based on the existing Myrina brand specification introduced in 1974, is a 15W/30W oil incorporating Shell's unique Extra High Viscosity Index (XHV1), giving it the essential properties of a synthetic lubricant.

In field trials, says Shell, high-mileage 38-tonne GCW vehicles have shown consistent gains of 2% in fuel economy without any increase in oil consumption, along with savings in maintenance costs of 4%.

Oil change periods have been doubled by some chassis manufacturers in consequence of using the new oil and in some cases trebled. It has been approved by a number of European truck manufacturers including Mercedes-Benz, MAN, Volvo and Scania.

To pay for the more expensive manufacturing process there will be a 20% price premium on the new oil, but Shell says this should be more than compensated for by savings of up to 2530 a year on fuel alone for the average 38-tonner, or about 2400 for the typical long distance coach.

To compensate for extended change periods, Shell Oil is, however, recommending that customers using its diesel oil diagnostic service should take interim samples for analysis.

It will be sold in five, 25 and 105 litre containers.
