A FIVE-ton lorry ban around Reading would be ineffective and "horribly costly", according to the Freight Transport Association.
FTA south-east regional controller John Morris has told Reading Borough Council that the plan for a five-ton "tourniquet" on the A 4074 at Reading would force some vehicles to make an 11-mile detour.
He claims that it will have a particularly harsh effect on Reading and Oxford businesses, and points out that a May 1979 RBC survey showed that only 160 vehicles out of 8500 daily would be rerouted by the permit scheme.
Instead, FTA says the council should opt for the "commonsense approach" of setting up an advisory routeing scheme, based on the evidence obtained from detailed origin and destination surveys.
