An R-plate seen on a vehicle in Northern Ireland has puzzled at least one reader. As in Britain, learner-drivers in the Six Counties have for many years had to carry L-plates. Recent legislation has provided that on passing the test the beginner is granted a Restricted Licence for a year. To prevent any bursts of enthusiasm the Rdriver is limited to 45 mph, even with a car. And conviction may result in him going back to square one to start his 12-month Restricted Licence period all over again.
