As might be expected, Scammell has some of the highest-powered exhibits at Earls Court—the Crusader with nearly 300 bhp, for instance. But publicity manager Peter Wood is making do without any power at all these days. How come? Well, he's been bitten by the gliding bug and is off to Dunstable Downs at the drop of a gudgeon pin, to savour all that silent soaring.
He tells me it's a bug that bites really deep, and that the joy of wheeling a big bird around the sky loses none of its fascination through familiarity. So if you overhear him chatting about thermals and upcurrents he's probably not talking engine-cooling technicalities at all_
