Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Protests by two local authorities to a fares increase on buses run by the Gateshead and District Omnibus Co. were rejected by the Northern Area Traffic Commissioners.

The application, opposed by Gateshead Corporation and neighbouring Felling urban council, was for a Id increase on about half the company's present 4d, 5d, 6d, 10d and Is fares—but the 3d minimum fare remains.

Mr. J. L. R. Croft, for the company, said it laced increased expenditure of £33,000 a year but Mr. C. D. Jackson, the Town Clerk of Gateshead, said this should be met from capital and fares should not go up now.

The chairman, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, said the Commissioners regarded the application as reasonable and had no hesitation in granting it to come into force next Tuesday. Other operators on joint routes will adjust their fares.
