• A strong bid for the local buses operated by the Sheffield Joint Omnibus Conunittee (local council and British Railways) has been made by Sheffield City Council. These buses operate in an area of from five to 10 miles radius from the city centre and are known as the R routes,
Under the Transport Bill all outside interests of British Railways in bus services would automatically be transferred to the National Bus Company. Sheffield's aim is to forestall such a move, as the 164 buses at present involved on B routes, together with 30 buses on C routes (Joint services running well beyond the city boundaries) are operated as an integral unit.
Furthermore, some route:, in the enlarged city area are B routes and concessionary fares are not available to people who will be eligible if they lived in the central A area.
