Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A last-minute exhibit by Goodyear at the Commercial Motor Show is of major significance for the future of truck tyres. It is the 0.800 textile-radial and, while retaining the merits of radial-steel cord tyres—there are three steel-cord bands under the tread, it gives some other advantages too.

. At the Show a 9.00-20 example is exhibited and it is reported that over 2.000 of this size and the 7.50-16 are currently on test in the UK. Volume production is due to start in the spring next year and although 9.00-20 is likely to be the largest size offered. Goodyear textile-radial tyres have been produced in France for three years in sizes up to the largest in common use on the Continent.

Goodyear is at the moment using nylon cords for the carcass construction but the design is adaptable and it is envisaged that any future tyre fabric such as polyester and glass-fibre will be used. A big advantage of the design is in the flexibility it gives to the tyre designer. The size and numbers of plies can be varied to suit particular applications. Instead of a single radial-steel cord in a tyre using that construction from 1 to 6 plies can be used 'according to size: the 9.00-20 at the Commercial Motor Show has 6 plies.

The new tyre will be the same price as the Goodyear Unisteel steel-cord tyre and has the same weight-carrying capacity. But it will be 10 per cent lighter and Goodyear quotes a 'very conservative estimate" of 10 to 15 per cent better tread life. This is because of the less flexible wall but as a "belted" tread with steel cords is retained there will be the same fuel-saving features as a radial steel cord tyre.
