Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

double-bottom outfits being allowed on the roads of this country. Do such vehicles have an excessive cut-in and what is your opinion regarding their stability in service?

AThe cut-in of a double-bottom vehicle

with a total length of, say, 70ft. should be no greater than that of a conventional articulated vehicle with an axle spread of 38ft. No information is available regarding jack-knifing tests carried out with doublebottom vehicles or the extent to which the avoidance of jack-knifing is dependent on correct braking-force distribution. In our opinion, however, jack-knifing of the tractive unit and the first trailer should be no more likely with a double-bottom artic than with a normal type, and jack-knifing of the two trailers should be impossible on other than icy roads.

Reversing a double-bottom vehicle for more than a few yards is virtually impossible and it is considered that this would be the vehicle's greatest disadvantage if used on congested routes.
