role of preventive maintenance in modern road vehicle operation. Would you please indicate articles or other references that you may know of in this connection. To what extent have traditional overhaul procedures at fixed time or mileage intervals been replaced in favour of TA RAN (-test and
replace as necessary") and other aircrafts industry concepts?
AWhile preventive maintenance in vehicle operation is of prime importance we cannot refer you to any single article on the subject, rather maintenance is dealt with continually by authors when writing about other aspects of road transport and we would suggest that you visit a library where bound volumes of Commercial Motor are obtainable. Our Handyman series deals with detailed maintenance problems each week.
Referring to overhaul procedures it is now almost universally accepted that the "test and replace as necessary" system is the most economical and it is this which is most used. Even so vehicles must be service checked at regular intervals.
Some larger bus companies still employ the fixed heavy overhaul time cycle in which complete units may be replaced, but these are certainly in the minority.
