• The cost of used truck and trailer tyres could rise following the introduction of safety regulations for secondhand tyres.
Plans for the regulations were unveiled this week by the Department of Transport, which will consult the industry on the issue.
Road safety minister Steven Norris says about 650,000 of used tyres—a third of those currently being offered for sale—would fail to meet the proposed standards. These will require tyres to: • Be lump, bulge and tear-free; • Have no exposed ply or cord; • Have a minimum tread depth of 2mm.
