• The United Road Transport Union plans to open a driver agency which pays higher than average rates was backed at its biennial Delegates Meeting last week, The agency will be founded within 18 months in Manchester, home of URTU's head office. URTU says it will employ the drivers at a rate "significantly above £4-anhour" and give them pension rights and full employment protection. Initially it will concentrate on UK general haulage, L. Also at last Sunday and Monday's conference, URTU said hauliers should boycott Morocco, and the Government should act on the growing problem of drivers being targeted by drug smugglers. Its general secretary David Higginbottom said that Morocco could face "economic collapse" if the ban is enforced. "Morocco is a relatively undeveloped country and it relies heavily on road transport. if necessary, we will step up the action by advising tourists from the member countries not to visit areas where drivers are unfairly treated."
