Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

model in the extensive Cargo range. This 38-tonne tractive unit, introduced two years ago, has the Cummins L10 engine in 208kW (280hp) charge-cooled form. While by no means a premium model, the Cargo has proved popular with operators looking for a productive truck at a reasonable price.

Seeing a lot of use with large haulage fleets (including Ford itself), the 3828 has established a good reputation for reliability. The Cummins engine in particular is a rugged unit, and is notably oil-tight — which is good as far as the engine is concerned, but not so useful for linkages and cables under the cab, which have to rely on other sources for their lubrication.

Workshop watched a relatively new vehicle undergo a service at the Trmom garage in Luton. The tractor had covered 22,000km of typical haulage work, and was due for what Ford terms a B-service, carried out every 20,000km. This is a fairly straightforward maintenance service, and as fitter Roy Golder told us, presented few difficult problems.

There are a few points which those not familiar with the 3828 should look out for, and in some cases attention to these can prevent serious problems. Two examples are lubrication of the clutch cross-shaft at the back of the engine block, and changing the filter in the engine cooling system. Another point to watch out for is the requirement, when greasing the kingpins, to unload the stub axle, but to keep the wheel on the ground.
