Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The counterfeiting of products and parts is a serious international issue. An EEC Regulation, No. 3842/86, has recently come into force banning the import of counterfeit goods into the EEC. This is being implemented by Customs and Excise authorities throughout the EEC and legislation is about to be introduced in the UK to make counterfeiting and the handling of counterfeit parts a criminal offence.

Until now the UK was out of line with many other countries in that counterfeiting only applied to the coin of the realm. However, the copying of registered trade marks is to be brought within the scope of the new legislation and some protection will be afforded.
