Dllow tyre industry • Is the oil industry following down the path taken by the tyre industry a decade ago and introducing higher quality products at no extra cost to the customer?
Shell UK, which meets 17% of this country's haulage lubricant demand, has introduced two new oils; it hopes to recover production costs increased by up to a fifth with increased sales.
• Advanced Rimula X, available since September, was developed to give high performance across the widest range of diesel and petrol engines.
Its high spec meets demands from Daimler-Benz, MAN-VW and Volvo, besides the tough new American API (American Petroleum Institute) CE and SG standards.
• Myrina TX 10W/30, avail able since October, is a highperformance diesel (SHPD) engine oil developed for use in the biggest turbocharged and charge-cooled 'engines.
It is said to be totally shearstable and will not shear out of grade. This means the fuel economy benefits of a 10W30 oil can be achieved without compromise to oil consumption and engine protection.
Dynamometer tests indicate that an on-road saving of 3% should be realistic. Bore polish tests such as the Ford Tornado and Daimler-Benz 0M364A multi-cylinder engine tests and MAN QC 13 017 engine tests gave excellent results.
