• Ford is recalling 30,000 long-wheelbase Transit vans because their steering linkages are breaking.
No-one has been injured yet, says Ford, but it has received 49 complaints from customers regarding "excessive strain on the vehicles during low-speed manoeuvering".
Commercial Motor understands that in some cases the steering box input shaft is failing because of a misalignment between the steering box and the column.
Failures of the shaft appear to be confined to LWB Transits manufactured between February 1986 and May 1988. Ford says that not all the 30,000 vehicles will require modifications, but it -needs to check every Transit to be sure.
It is thought that a second universal joint will be fitted to the steering column.
