Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

1,600rpm. At this weight Eaton's 4106 synchromesh sixspeed direct drive transmission is specified, with the option of a 6109 nine-speed range-change.

Specially developed for construction and export markets the articulated 8x6 Multidrive unit with six wheels driving and six wheels steering, is designed to carry payloads of up to 35 tonnes.

Its 14.6-litre 3406 sixcylinder 317kW (425hp) Caterpillar engine, no stranger to the construction industry, may be an added advantage in this environment. The MTM-55 is based on the old Bedford TM 4x2 chassis cab and uses a nine-speed Fuller transmisson.

As well as the three new engines for its light commercial range (CM 20-26 October), Ford is showing a number of derivatives on the theme of the Ford Transit, including the Motor Panels high-roof conversion, County 4 x4 models and the Coachwork Walker Transit Luton shown here.

The nature of the buyout of Walker and Coachwork Conversions means that some of Walker's products are not manufactured by the new company. In the case of Transit Luton vans, the Coachwork Conversions Maxiflow Luton survives, and not the Walker van Luton body which we tested two years ago (CM December 20 1986). The Maxiflow on the Ford stand is based on the extra-long-wheelbase Transit with side skirts, bulkhead fairings and a Hedadeck floor. This vehicle is accompanied by a Transit 190 crew-cab with a Coachwork Walker door fitted, and a Hawson Garner tipper body. The new engines are the revamped 2.5-litre DI Transit diesel, the 1.8-litre naturally-aspirated version of the forthcoming P100 diesel for the Escort vans, and a 1.3-litre "lean-burn" petrol engine for the same.

There is no sign of the turbocharged version of the 2.5litre Transit diesel, although the smart money is on a late spring launch for the power unit that will be fitted with a Garrett blower and will be sold mainly to operators in the PSV sector who have been calling for a more powerful diesel Transit.

Iveco Ford Truck has introduced a 6x2 tag-wded 260.36 TurboStar tractive unit, intended primarily for international operation.

With an outer axle spread of 4.55m it is best suited to semitrailers with king pin positions of 1.4 and 1.6m. The third axle can be raised by hydraulic ram operated by a simple rocker switch from within the cab.

Iveco's 8210.42 chargecooled 13.8-litre engine develops 269kW (360hp) at 1,800 rpm and an exceptional . 1,766Nm (1,3031bft) of torque at 1,000rpm. Either a fully synchromesh ZF16S160 or an Eaton 14613 constant mesh transmission can be specified.

Twin-steer tractive units outsell tag-axle units at a rate of two to one in the UK, but the potential of greater traction and reduced tyre wear is still attractive to some operators.

At 17-tonnes Iveco Ford has provided two Cummins engines for Cargo 4x2 rigid chassis. The Cummins 6BTA 5.9-litre engine replaces the long serving vee-eight engine in the 1718 and develops 126.5kW (170hp) at 2,500rpm with maximum torque of 602kW (170hp) at 2,500ipili with maximum torque of 602Nm (444Ibft) at 1,50Orpm.

The 1721 is fitted with the Cummins 6CT 8.3-litre engine which produces 150.6kW (202hp) at 2,400rpm and high torque of 748Nm (55211bft) at 1,50Orpm.

The 1718 uses an Eaton sixspeed all-synchromesh transmission, while the 1721 is fitted with an Eaton nine-speed range-change gearbox. Both are available with day or sleeper cabs and a wide range of wheelbase dimensions.

At 7.5 tonnes Iveco Ford offers a high-powered version of the 0815 Cargo fitted with Ford's six-litre turbocharged engine producing 114kW (153hp) matched to a ZFS5-35 five-speed overdrive gearbox.

The show model features a sleeper cab, which is new to this weight of Cargo, as well as disc brakes front and rear and 8.5R17.5 wheel and tyre equipment_ If it is power that you want then look no further than the Mercedes 2448 which, powered by the air-to-air chargecooled 14.62-litre 0M442LA vee-eight, is the most powerful tractive unit in Europe, rated at 362kW (485hp) at 2,100rpm.

Mercedes' Powerliner 2 chassis replace the Powerliner 1635S, 2035S, 1628, 1644 and 2028 models, with higher performance and more fuel efficient engines. Both the 4x2 1729S and 6x2 2429S use the naturally aspirated 0M442 engines which gives 4% more power — 218kW (296hp) — at 2,100rpm (200rpm less) and 6% more torque — 1,112Nm (82011bft) over a wider rev range.

The turbocharged 0M442A engine is used by the 1735S and 2435S tractive units. Revised fueling has extended the engine's torque curve plateau providing maximum output of 1,619Nm (1,1941lbft) from 1,000 to 1,600rpm.

The 1748 4x2 tractive unit employs the 0M442LA power unit. The new 814D T2 model at 7.5 tonnes combines a low kerbweight with generous power and torque with a more powerful charge-cooled Mercedes 3.97-litre engine.

The air-to-air charge-cooled four-cylinder 0M364LA unit develops 100kW (134hp) at 2,600rpm and maximum torque of 402Nrn (29711bft) at 1,40Orpm.
