to a number of misleading points in your spare parts survey (CM 6-12 October issue).
The prices quoted appear in the main to be based on the manufacturers' retail prices, and as you will be aware these are subject to a discount for fleet operators from some of the manufacturers' dealers.
This makes a significant difference to the nett cost of the listed parts to a fleet operator and, as an example, the Ford Cargo engine listed at 22,309.58 would be subject to a discount of 17.5%, while the Volvo FL4 engine would be as you printed 2,024.00, as Volvo does not offer any discount on engine sales.
I would also point out that the ERF 6x2 clutch assembly price quoted is for a complete clutch including release bearing, while the Volvo FLIO price for a clutch assembly is for a clutch cover only.

Editor's reply: The parts Price survey was based on manufacturers' parts prices because suci prices provide a fair guide to spares costs. Not every fleet can claim a discount and often a part is required quickly at full manufacturer's price. While cer tarn parts prices differed accord. ing to what parts were available (eg clutch assembly), the comparison of prices for many different parts gives a clear overall result (the Volvo's parts cost more than the ERF's).
