THE FIRST major conference to be jointly organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the USA's Society of Automotive Engineers was opened in London last Monday by Transport Minister Lynda Chalker.

Three three-day conference, held at the IMechE's Birdcage Walk headquarters in London, was entitled Vecon '84 and examined light-duty vehicle design for "total economy".

The 31 papers covered a wide range of economy-related subjects and included a report from Ford in the USA on an uncooled, small direct-injection diesel engine, and presentations on cvt (continuously variable transmission) development.

DEUTZ Engines has named West Coast Diesel Services as its Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire dealer.

Deutz says that West Coast Diesel Services, based at Pinxton in Nottinghamshire, will provide a comprehensive range of engines for commercial vehicle. Power units for the construction industry, including engines for hydraulic excavators, cranes and off-highway trucks, will be handled.

West Coast Diesel Services is just over a mile from Junction 28 of the Ml.
