Haulier 'fired' two men to get others back to work

CHARLES ALEXANDER (Transport) Ltd. reluctantly dismissed two very good workers from its Elgin depot after it was subjected to pressure including strike action, an industrial tribunal was told at Inverness last week. One of the dismissed men, Mr. Grigor R. Winchester, was claiming redundancy payment.
Assistant managing director Mr. George Scott said that the Scottish Commercial Motormen's Union objected when two of its members were made redundant and not two non-members, Mr. Winchester and a Mr. White who turned out to be paid-up TGWU members. At the end of March men at the depot struck, refusing to work until Mr. Winchester and Mr. White were dis missed.
The strike affected the collection of 75 per cent of fish traffic at Aberdeen for delivery to various parts of Scotland and England and to get the men back to work Mr. Alexander dismissed Mr. Winchester and Mr. White.
Mr. Winchester told the tribunal that previously he had been an SCMU member, but since May 1965 belonged to the TGWU. It was not true that he had been in arrears with the SCMU.
Since dismissal he had become a bus driver. He had applied for readmission to the SCMU but had heard nothing.
The tribunal's decision will be announced later.
