Councillor W. E. Messenger, Mayor of Malden and Coombe. has been appointed group distribution manager of Pinchin, Johnson and Associates, Ltd., London, with effect from November I. His resignation as commercial sales manager, fleet division, of Henlys, Ltd.. London. takes effect at the end of this month.

Mr. H. N. G. Harrison has been elected to the board of Edmunds. Walker and Co., Ltd., following the retirement of Mr. J. T. McNeil. Mr. Harrison will continue to handle publicity and sales promotion operations and to act as personal assistant to Mr. T. E. Walker, managing director. Mr. McNeil retains his seat on the board.

Mr. F. D. M. Gamble was installed as president of the Diesel Engineers and Users Association at the annual general meeting of the association last week. The Percy Still medal for 1961 has been awarded to Mr. John Griffith for his paper "Diesel Propulsion for . Small Vessels" presented at a meeting of the association in February.

Mr. John Creek succeeds Mr. A. H. Davies on November 1 as managing director of Fibreglass, Ltd. Mr. Davies becomes vice-chairman.

Mr. C. W. Page has been appointed sales manager of the Industrial Division of Castro], Industrial, Ltd., a newly created post. Mr. Page has been with Castro! for 34 years.

Mr. W. S. Renwick has been appointed assistant divisional superintendent for the southern division of London Transport's network of country bus and Green Line coach services. Mr. Renwick started his career in transport as a bus conductor.

Mr. J. Bowman is to head a new international public relations division being established by the Perkins Group. Other members of the new division, which will co-ordinate sales promotion activities. include: Mr. F. G. Hooper, group Press and U.K. public relations manager; Mr. K. W. Reed, employee publications manager; Mr. R. H. Thompstone, Press officer; Mr. H. Henson, factory visits co-ordinator.

New Ferry Ship Means Daily Service

THE latest vessel for the Transport Ferry Service fleet, the 2.600-ton m.v. '' Doric Ferry," was launched from the Ailsa shipyard at Troon on Tuesday. The new vessel provides 17,000 sq. ft. of shipping space and is the second to be launched this year for the Transport Ferry Service. She joins her sister ship, the m.v. " Cerdic Ferry," on the TilburyAntwerp/Rotterdam route early next year. With the " Doric " will come a daily service to Antwerp and Rotterdam for lorries and freight trailers.

Herr Willy Max Rademacher, German M.P. and president of the West German forwarding agents' and warehousemen's organization, Arbeitsgemeinshaft Spedition told Lagcrei e.V., of Bonn, has been elected president of the International Federation of Forwarding Agents' Associations (FE ATM, of Antwerp.

Obituary

WE regret to record the deaths of Mr. VV J. M. Ridley, Mr. F. S. Caplin, Mr. T. Siddle and Mr. S. Hedgecock. Mr. Ridley, who died at Hexham. Northumberland, founded the road haulage firm of J. M. Ridley. Ltd. He was 50.

Mr. Caplin, who was 60. had been transport manager of the North Thames Gas Board since 1949 and served the Board for 31 years. Mr. Siddle, who was 84, was a pioneer in the' motor coach business in Penrith, Cumberland.

Mr. Hcdgecock was a director and chief engineer of Laystall Cromard, Ltd. In his 34 years with the company he was responsible for many Laystall projects. including the development of Cromard cylinder liners.

Too Much H.P.

HiRE-PURCHASE commitments on 'vehicles he bought totalled £212 a month—far in excess of his ability to pay—a former haulage contractor said at his public examination in bankruptcy at Newport last week.

The former contractor. Rhys Evans. po of New Street, Newrt, now a £10 a week van driver, said he had debts of £3,757 with 28 creditors and no assets at all.

He set up business as a haulage contractor in October, 1958. with borrowed capital. His first lorry cost £1,530 and at one time he had four or five on the road.
