Exclusive Description of New 5-7-ton Articulated Vehicle with Detachable Trailer: Four-cylindered 40 b.h.p. Engine with New Double-reduction Gear

TIT:RING 1932 the extensive range of Latil products will, with but few modifications, continue to be marketed. At the, works of Latil Industrial Vehicles, Ltd., 11, Albert Embankment, London, S.E.11, we were able, a few days ago, to examine a new 5-7-ton articulated vehicle with detachable semi-trailer, which will be seen at the forthcoming Olympia Show. In many respects it resembles the B2T-type 5-ton tractor-trailer outfit, but it has a bigger engine.

The tractor has a wheelbase of 8 ft., the measurement between driving and trailing axles being 12 ft. 8 ins. With an'overall length of 28 ft. 1 in., a useful platform space measuring 15 ft. by 7 ft. 6 ins. Is available.

The tractor has pressed-steel frame members of a maximum depth of 8 ins., giving a frame height (laden) of 2 ft. 3i ins. Semi-elliptic springs over 4 ft. long are fitted, and the frame curves downward slightly at the rear, so that the rear springs are sloped.

The engine is the well-known Latil four-cylindered sidevalve unit of 90 ram. bore and 130 mm. stroke, and it develops 40 b.h.p. It has an aluminium crankcase and base chamber, a, single cylinder block with detachable head, and the crankshaft is carried in three main bearings. The water pump, fan-belt pulley, Bosch magneto and Marellal dynamo (if fitted) are mounted in line. There is pressure lubrication by submerged skew-driven oil pump.

The clutch is a single-plate dry unit of 11 ins, outer diameter, with three-toggle withdrawal gear. The fourspeed gearbox is bolted to the crankcase and has central concealed-gate change. On the rear face of the gearbox is bolted a double-herring-bone reduction-gearcase. As the drive is taken to the rear axle from the lower gearshaft, the transmission line has a small angularity. The solid propeller shaft has, at each end, quadruple fabric universal joints, and the final drive is by spiral-bevel gears with four-pinion differential. The semi-floating axle shafts are contained in a banjo-type axle case. The overall gear ratios are 7.75, 13.5, 24 and 29 to 1 forward and 51 to 1 reverse.

Worm-and-sector steering of familiar Latil type is used. The four-wheel brakes are operated by one French Westinghouse vacuum cylinder, attached to the frame by two vertical plates, giving it a parallelogram mounting with freedom of movement. This is made use of to obtain balanced application between front and rear brakes, a separate balance arm equalizing the pressure on the two front brakes. The hand lever applies the same shoes in only the rear drums. 011 front and rear wheels the drums are of 17 ins. diameter and the shoes 4 ins. wide.

The trailer frame has parallel side members made from rolled steel channels & ins. deep. They are set 3 ft. 7i ins. apart, but to them are riveted outriggers, giving an effective overall width of 6 ft. 61 ins. The rigid drawbar is built up of two channels riveted in triangular formation, and at its front end is the ball for the automatic coupling, this being lever-mounted so that over-running applies the trailingwheel brakes. The drotes are of 20 ins, diameter and 2 ins. width. A separate hand screw on the drawbar controls the brakes when the trailer is standing alone.

Coupling is effected, when the trailer brakes have been applied, by backing the tractor under the ball. This ball contains a roller, which rides up the tractor ramp into an eccentrically mounted socket at the top. The pressure turns the socket housing, which is automatically locked by a bolt that can be freed only by the driver.

The prices for chassis are: tractor £595, trailer £245. This is with tyre equipment, the tractor having 30-in. by 5-in. pneumatics (twin rear) and the trailing wheels 38-in.. by 7-in. pneumatics ; the jockey wheels of the trailer have steel tyres. For a Mai-chal 12-volt lighting set L25 is charged, and L15 is the cost of a Marchel starter, fitted. A new 3-tonner, virtually a modification of the IKB2 21-ton chassis, designated the PB2 and priced at k:525 with tyres, is also announced. It has the same type of engine as in the model above described, but spiral-bevel final drive, with a live axle instead of the external spur-gear drive Which is used in the lil22 21-tonner ; also it has 30-in. by 5-in. tyres

(twin rear) testead of 38.4n. by 7-in. single :tyres. The KW2-type has not been withdrawn from production.
