CHIEF SUPERINTENDENT John Millar of Northamptonshire police is urging truckers to be on their guard against attacks with anaesthetic sprays which allow thieves to steal their loads with less risk of interruption.

"We had an incident in my area last week where a driver was asleep near the MI and a chemical spray was used to induce a deeper sleep," he says, "Fortunately nothing of value was taken but you can't ignore the potential health risks that these attacks pose. The most important thing is for drivers to think carefully about where they park overnight —they are most at risk in isolated rural laybys.

He warns drivers against leaving their windows open but Tony Allen, chairman of the RHA security committee, says most modern cabs have other ventilation points where sprays could be inserted.

• British driver Pete Sutton who runs Cambridgeshire-based Surrey Overland, became the latest victim of a Continental gas attack this week as he slept in his cab near St Omer in northern France.

"I pulled in at about lam, had a can of beer and woke up with an almighty hangover and f470 worse off," he reports.
