Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

With the growing number of speed cameras on British roads, it pays to stay below the

limit. Kevin Swallow investigates two new

products that are designed to keep you legal.

The government is cracking down on speeding motorists, and the number of Gatso cameras in the UK is on the rise. One company, SPL Technology, has taken up the challenge on behalf of drivers and is marketing a pair of devices which are designed to help make drivers aware of their speed. Drivers are being caught out because they are not aware of their speed in restricted areas, says SPLTechnology. To combat the problem, it has launched two products.

The first of these is Speed Alert. an "audiovisual" warning that activates when the driver reaches his choice of six pre-selected speeds. A bleep is emitted until the vehicle returns to the designated limit. The second product is Top Speed Limiter, which prevents the vehicle from exceeding pre-set road and engine speed limits. Both are retrofits.but the manufacturer claims that neither hampers the manufacturer's electries nor affects the warrantyThey fit on the dash with a simple one-button operation and according to SPL. most manufacturers are happy to have this device fitted: the battle is to persuade those who spend the cash.

But using such a device as these makes perfect sense to creator of the products and SPL managing director. John Southall. He asks: "How much is your licence worth to you? Our government gave a commitment that is now policy to reduce road casualties by 40% and child casualties by 50%.The government's focus is on cutting speed rather than encouraging better driving.

Southall believes the additional benefits of using one of his kits make them invaluable driver aids."Speed reduction imparts additional benefits to people living and working on and near the roads, in terms of pollution, noise and being able to enjoy their environment,he adds. Not to mention the reduced speed also saving fuelsomething all operators agree with. •
