• Contact:DC Phil Pullinger on 01708 361212 WHILE CM WAS attending the international launch of the new VW Caddy (page 52) we were able to try the new 4motion version of the latest T5 Transporter. Gone is the aggressive, off-roading style in favour of Haldex viscouscoupling, a system more suited to occasional use.

We tried it out on some challenging mountain tracks in the Black Forest, where it coped admirably up to its rims in mud, The only point where it failed to move away was right on the apex of a hairpin bend, and even then rolling back a few inches did the job.

The ESP stability control fitted to our version also helped us negotiate the odd patch of ice in relative safety. In either kind of terrain, the engagement of rear wheel drive is seamless an ally undetectable.

The Transporter 4motio on sale in UK in March in a types.Although the definite line-up has yet to be decide( be one or both of the wel live-cylinder engines.
