"SHOP EARLY for the General Election" is the RAC's motto. The club has renewed its campaign for a better deal for road users and will continue it until the Prime Minister decides to go to the country.

Jack Williams, chairman of the RAC public policy committee, who obviously has a droll sense of humour, has told all MPs that road users will expect to benefit from any tax reduction in the next Budget. The gap between taxation on road users and expenditure on the roads widens steadily and, adding insult to injury, nearly £175 million was underspent lest year.

Laying about him with abandon, Jack Williams attacks the "scandal" of London's roads and calls for an immediate review of Government policy on toll bridges and tunnels.

If he gets nothing else, he deserves nine out of 10 for effort.
