LAST week, at Nottingham, the East Midland Traffic Commissioners refused a licence for a proposed express bus service from Northampton to Bournemouth, passing through Aylesbury. The objectors, Keith Coaches Ltd. and Red Rover Omnibus Co. Ltd., opposed a number of suggested boarding and alighting points, but accepted the application in principle.
Chairman of, the Commissioners, Mr. C. Hodgson, said: "We like the idea. But on the weight of evidence it must be re f used."
Associated Motorways were seeking the licence for United Counties Omnibus Co, Ltd., one of their member companies. A fare of 41s. was proposed, which would be 12s. 6d.• dearer than the summer service run by Keith Coaches to Bournemouth on certain Saturdays.
Mr. S. Terrel, for the objectors, reminded the Commissioners of a hearing in 1959 at Aylesbury, when United Counties opposed the licence granted to Keith Coaches. He did not think the safeguards for this service were adequate. " They would be no real protection from someone who is coming into the area on a milk round ", he said. Mr. Terrel suggested that no hardship would be caused if the proposed service did not pick up at the points mentioned in the application.
Mr. Hodgson said that figures for Keith's service had shown that they could not afford to lose "even a handful of passengers ".
