IT is understood that a sub-committee of the S.M.M.T. meeting in London this week I had the specific task of arriving at definite proposals for articulated vehicle braking systems to meet the amended C. and U. regulations. The Ministry of Transport is anxious for an early decision and the sub-committee had been formed from the S.M.M.T.'s vehicle and trailer committees to speed up the process.
Recommendations decided upon will shortly be put to tft main committee set up by the S.M.M.T., the Ministry and operator organizations. These will be used in an effort to standardize on air-pressure circuits and the method of operation of the secondary system which the amended regulations require; it has already been agreed that a three-line system shall be adopted for artics and that a line pressure of 85 p.s.i. should be used.
The need for some standardization is obvious from the point of matching. It is known that some operators and manufacturers feel strongly that secondary braking should be on all axles and that there is a suggestion from the unions that the secondary system should be as efficient as the service brake.
