Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A LTHOUGH it has an output of 1-1175 amp, for continuous operation, the Balarc 175 welding transformer offered by the Ashton-Young Engineering Development Co., Ltd., 76 Cambridge Road, Kingston on Thames, Surrey, weighs only 67 lb. and is remarkably compact. This is achieved by replacing conventional copper coil windings with aluminium foil. Not only does this save weight but, the foil can stand temperatures up to 500 degrees C. which is saA to be wen beyond the limits of copper coils. The Balarc 175 costs £64 10s.

Safety Light A POWERFUL permanent magnet is ri contained in the base of the C.M.S.1 Cleerglow Magnetic Safelite, produced by the Silvaflame. Co., Ltd., 218a Monument Road, Birmingham, 16. This allows it to be attached to any ferrous surface. The base also contains a transformer to reduce the mains current supply to a safe, low voltage and carries a rod on which the adjustable lamp unit, which comprises a Perspex reflector, a switch and a 21-watt bulb, is mounted. The lamp. complete with 6 ft. of cable, costs £4 15s.

Oil-fired Heater BY the use of a new combustion air supply system Colt Ventilation, Ltd:, Surbiton, Surrey, claim that their range of Turbo-Static oil-fired industrial heaters have combustion chambers up to 15 times smaller than those of conventional heaters and that the chambers can operate at temperatures nearly double those of other types. This gives greater efficiency and more complete combustion of the gas-oil fuel used, thus reducing post-comblistion deposits.

In the heater, a blower forces air into the combustion chamber through vaned slots in the chamber wall. The vanes impart swirl to the incoming air and produce two contrarotating air streams.

This turbulence promotes rapid mixing of the air and the injected oil mist and is said to form a barrier layer around the combustion chamber to prevent excessive heat reaching the chamber walls. The heaters, which are available with outputs of 250,000, 350,000 and 500,000 B.Th.U., are compaCt and have a clean appearance.

Versatile Saw A 16-IN.-LONG tapered tungsten steel in• blade which, it is claimed, will cut hard and soft wood, wood-in which nails are embedded, bard rubber, plastics, and small mild steel and soft metal tubes and bars, is used for the Eclipse No. 66 general purpose saw manufactured by James Neill and Co. (Sheffield), Ltd., Sheffield. 11.

The saw blade is attached to the handle by a single bolt and wing nut. It can be set at nine different angles in relation to the hatidle and be replaced quickly when necessary. The complete saw costs 15s. 6d. and replacement blades are priced at 6s. 6d. each.

Electrode Holders TWO welding electrode holders produced by Quasi-Arc, Ltd., 213 Oxford St., Bilston, Staffs, known as the Handicool 600 and the Handicool 600 (Insulated) are, as their name implies, intended to provide a comfortable grip for the operator and to keep cool for long periods of continuous welding. The material around the jaws of the insulated version is resistant to heat and fracture and can be renewed when necessary. Both holders can accommodate currents up to 600 amp. and the range of electrode sizes .covered is from

10 s.w.g. to in.

Theft Prevention A N anti-theft device manufactured by

the Oscott Instrument Co., 74 Kings Road, Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire, immobilises a vehicle and also sets off an alarm if the unit is tampered with. The apparatus, which costs £5, can be fitted and wired up in three hours. It is put into operation by an illuminated lettered dial giving approximately 1,000 combinations. The combinations can be altered easily when, for instance, a vehicle changes hands.

Reardozer Attachment ABULL-DOZER blade for attachment to the rear three-point linkages of Ferguson 35 and 65 tractors is offered by Bamford and Evershed, Ltd., Salford Priors, Evesham, Worcs. The implement is known as the Sapper Reardozer and, due to its novel mounting, has a• closely controlled floating action whilst transferring weight to the driving wheels of the tractor to increase adhesion and, therefore, traction.

If required. Bomford and Evershed can supply a reversed-control outfit for Ferguson tractors to allow the driver to sit facing the rear when using the dozer. A scarifying grid is an additional optional attachment for the Reardozer device.

Bigger Mirror

VOR those who feel that rearward vision from current commercial vehicle cabs could be improved, F. G. Ruggles, Ltd„ Hounslow, Middlesex, offer a very large mirror for external fitting. It is known as the Mammoth and is 6 in. wide and 1 ft. 2 in. deep. The glass is rubber-mounted in a detachable metal frame to simplify replacement. Two arms with double universal joints are provided for mounting the mirror, which costs £4 7s. 6d.

Tube Bending Compound A BISMUTH-BASED alloy filler for

insertion in tubes or open sections prior to bending is manufactured by Mining and Chemical Products, Ltd., 86 Strand, London, W.C.2, The material is known as Cerrobond and has a low melting point. It is poured into the tube and expands slightly as it solidifies, allowing tubes with walls as thin as .007 in. to be bent without distortion. After bending, the compound can be drained out of the component when liquefied by immersion in hot water and can be re-used indefinitely.
