THE withdrawal of special vehicles

from mid-Wales by R. Wynn and Sons, Ltd., Newport, had left a void in haulage facilities for round timber. Mr_ L, H. Shelton, acting Deputy North Western Licensing Authority, was told this at Newtown, on Tuesday, when Messrs. Lawley Bros., Church Stoke, Montgomerys, sought a B licence for two tractors and pole trailers to carry round timber within 80 miles of base.

Mr. J. Edward Jones, for the applicants, said that Mr. J. Lawley was previously a driver with Wynn. He had put a vehicle on C-hire, and later two more under contract-A licence when Wynn withdrew from Welshpool. These vehicles were the subject of the application. A short-term B licence was in Operation.

Answering questions from Mr. G. H. P. Beanies, objecting for the British Tranri

port Commission, Mr. Lawley said that work was from woodlands in the area to other parts of Wales, Liverpool, Manchester, the Midlands and Derbyshire.

Supporting evidence was given by Mr. T. H. Davis, of Messrs. Boyes and Bowden, Welshpool, sawmillers. He said that Wynn withdrew because of a slump in the timber trade. This had now passed.

Following further evidence of need, Mr. Beames submitted that it was remarkable to hear that customers, by supporting the, application, were ready to give up recent contracts to share the Use of B-licensed vehicles.

Mr. Shelton was satisfied that there was need for the vehicles. He was not surprised that Lawley wanted to change. One of the contracts was remarkable in that it tied the hauliers only, and was not binding for any fixed sum.
