coaches based on Leyland Atlantean chassis operated by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., has been fitted with a Leyland 0.680 engine in place of the 0.600 unit employed in the standard chassis.

The 11.1-litre 0.680 is similar in overall size to the 9.8-litre engine it replaces, but has maximum outputs of 150 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. and 450 lb.-ft. torque at 1,100 r.p.m. The smaller unit produces 125 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.ip.

The conversion has been carried out by Ribble experimentally and the coach, with various final-drive ratios, is being tried out on routes throughout the country to see what advantages accrue from the modification.

As reported on page 564, Ribble have made application to run Atlanteans on the motorway on a Keswick-London service.

AWARDS FOR LAND-ROVER DRIVERS

THE award for the best performance by a trade entry in the Land-Rover Owners' Club's fifth annual point-to-point meeting in the Midlands, last week-end, went to E. J. Hatchett, Eastern Automobiles, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. He was driving a Series It petrol-engined vehicle. The best performance by a private entry was by F. C. Pyke, Middlesbrough, in a Series I 86-in.-wheelbase petrol-engined Land-Rover.

Eliminating tests were held on Saturday, followed by a tough point-to-point contest on Sunday. Complicated tests had to be performed on slippery mud and steep gradients.
