"/OUR life must be something akin to
1 that of Proteus, the Greek demigod," remarked Mr. S. W. Nelson, Western Licensing Authority, at Bristol on Monday, when an applicant, who described himself as a builder arid-demolition contractor, said that he was at present engaged upon building two bungalows entirely unaided. He expected the work to take him 18 months. Sometimes he did odd-job haulage work.
At an adjourned hearing, Mr, S. G. Morley, Avening, Glos, the holder of a C licence, sought a limited B licence for his vehicle. He had not appeared at the original hearing, in September, because he said he bad mistaken the date.
Mr. Morley said that he proposed to B28 give up building and go in for haulage work. The application was supported by six jobbing-builders in the Tetbury area, one of whom described transport facilities for small men in the district as "pretty deadly."
Many of the transport concerns who were objecting were a long way away. This could add to costs, said the witnesses.
Granting the application for one vehicle of 3 tons 14 cwt., Mr. Nelson said that he was impressed by the evidence of the local builders who should not have to go long distances for a small amount of work.
IProteus was a Greek mythological demigod able to change from one form to another, but if anyone held him he resumed his proper shape. and would foretell the future if asked.]
