Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TOperpetuate'the memory of the late Sir James C. Percy, D.L., J.P., one of the leaders in motor journalism, it has been decided to secure in perpetuity the education and maintenance of a child at the children's home of the Motor and Cycle Trades Benevolent Fund. A committee of men prominent in motor matters has been formed, and subscriptions are invited to be addressed to either, of the joint honorary secretaries, Mr. H. M. Buist, care of The Autocar, Tudor Street, London, E.C.4,' or Mr. R. D.. F. Paul, care of The Motor, 5-15, Rosebery Avenue, London, E.C.1.

A SIX-WHEELED Guy lorry fitted with a TullochReading gas-producer plant is being tested over the Long Valley at Aldershot as we go to press with this issue, and we propose in our next issue to give our impressions of its performance. It has been ordered jointly. by the Nigerian Government and the Empire Cotton Growing Corporation, and the War Office has undertaken the conduct of reliac18

bility trials, both on metalled roads and across country. The vehicle will be shipped to Nigeria and be put into service partly on made roads and partly on unmetalled earth roads.

SPEAKING of gas-producers reminds us that

during the week we have had a couple of visits from Mr. Ejner G: Guildal, -of Copenhagen, representing the Danish Moorland Association. During the past decade the Danish Government has encouraged the afforestation of many thousands of acres of that low-lying country, Denmark, no part of which rises more than 400 ft. above sea level, and where the soil is light and sandy. To succour the birch and beech trees, mountain pine is being planted among them, but, after three or four years the pines must be removed, and a use is being sought for the timber. in the fulfilment of the scheme there will be a surplus of wood for the next 20 years, and Mr. Guiltlal sought our help and advice concerning the use of wood-burning gas-producers for road-transport purposes.

ALWAYS an enthusiast about historic products, Mr. Torn Thornycroft told us one day, when we were walking round the works at Basingstoke, that he thought of taking the old steam Thornycroft wagon that was in the 11/111SOUM there and having it everhatfied anti made to run again. It was built in 1895 and participated in the .1899 trial of the Liverpool Self-propelled Traffic Association, when it won a gold medal. That the 33-year old vehicle is still good and sound and capable of taking the road (although it would he a crime to saddle it with a load !) was shown by Mr. Thornycroft .taking it from London to Brighton in the parade of the old crocks on November 18th in commemora _ tion of the thirty-second anniversary of Emancipation Day. How well we remember that foggy morning of November 14th, 1896, and the trials and tribulations of the day I

AN organization which is doing very useful work is the Industrial Transport Association, of which Mr. P. J. Hannon, M.P., is president, and whose patronage includes Sir Robert A. Hadfield, Bart., and Sir Edward Manville. The association is open to thoseĀ° who play an active part in connection with industrial transport and, therefore, covers railway, road, shipping, etc., and, by bringing together active transport operators at meetings and social functions, assists in the dissemination of useful and valuable information. It is virtually a complement of (but, of course, in no way connected with) the Commercial Motor Users Association, which latter association embraces the owner, whereas the Industrial Transport Association is practically for the employee. Except for junior associates, the annual subscription is a guinea and a half. The next meeting is at 45, Charing Cross, S.W1, at 6.30 p.m. on December 11th, and prospective members are admitted. Air transport will be discussed.
