A New A11-British Van for 10-cwt. Loads.

STAND No. 78.

A VERY neat little van to carry 1O-eat. loads is shown on this stand by the Strode Engineering Works. It is an all-British vehicle embodying a Dorman power unit, and is claimed to have a petrol consumption-not exceeding a gallon per 35 miles, the.oiLconsumption also being proportionately low. Originally built as a touring-car chassis, it has been very little, altered except in the provision of stronger springing.

The frame is of the pressed-steel channel type upswept over the rear axle and inswept slightly towards the engine. Half-elliptic, springs are utilized at. the front and three-quarter elliptic springs at the rear.

The engine is three-point supported in the chassis, at the front on a crossmember, and at the rear by-.fra.me brackets. The gearbox is also carried in a like manner and is separate from the engine. It is a fcur-cylindered monobloc with detachable head, the bore and stroke being 69 mm. and 100 ram. respectively. The oil pump is situated in the sump and driven by an eccentric from the camshaft, the oil being carried under pressure to the main bearings and to troughs under the big-ends. Two Whittle :belts are employed for driving the fan and the dynamo. Circulation of the cooling water is thermo-siphonic, being controlled by a thermostat.

The gearbox provides three speeds forward and is. centrally controlled. From it thetdrive is taken through an open propeller shaft with two Hardy disc joints to, a rear axle of the, horizontal banjo type. The final drive reduction is 45 to 1.. Both brakes operate on the rear-wheei drums, and both are. compensated.

The pleasing appearance of the vehicle is increased. by the use of Sankey steel wheels, and a feature worthy of particular mention is the use of the Marles steering gear. On a wheelbase of 9 ft., 'the platform area afforded is 17 sq. ft.

Double doors are provided at the rear of the van, and access can be obtained, to the interior through a door in the partition behind the driver's seat.
