A New 2-ton Chassis. 20-seater Bus.
A Gravity Tipping Wagon.
STAND No. 83.
A VERY interesting exhibit on the stand of W. and G. du Cros, Ltd., is the 2-ton chassis, which has an extended wheelbase of 13 ft., and is now shown for the first. time. This chassis follows the lines of the well-kDowia 24-tou type, embodying a four-...--ijlizsler monobloc engine of sturdy design a cone clutch, and overhead-worm final drive. A difference is found in the gearbox, that of _the 2-tonner affordingithree forward speeds, whereas four speeds are provided on the 4-termer. The engine of the 2-tonner is a good example of modern design, points to notice, being..the large diameter of the water-pipes, the duplicated belt drive for the dynamo, the fan and the water impeller, and‘the accessible position of the magneto.
In the transmission a, point of interest. is the duplicated fabric joint between the clutch and the gearbox, the top of the last-named being covered with a glass plate, which enables one to examine the gearwheels, which are all of commendably sturdy design. The short and stiff sphned shafts are also worthy of note. The propeller shaft is provided with two large joints of the fabric type, and a spring-loaded pressed-steel arm takes the torque reaction of the hack axle. A similar back axle is shown mounted separately on a stand, and enables one to follow out the details of the two expanding brakes which operate in the rear-wheel drums.
Another exhibit consists of the 2-ton chassis fitted with a 20-seater bus body, made by James Bartle and Co., Ltd. This is finished and upholstered in red, and has a very fine appearance. Lastly, there is a Makrob gravity-type tipping body fitted to a 4-ton chassis.; this incorporates two -V-shaped steel receptacles, which can be tipped independently to either side of the vehicle. They are normally held in an upright position by chains and spring-loaded shackles gembodying levers, which can very quickly be released when required.
