Undertype Steam Wagon Chassis.

STAND No, 87:

STEAM-WAGON manufacturers are this year displaying chassis to an unusual extent. A typical example is to be seen on the Garrett stand, where a hare chassis of the firm's undertype wagon is shown. The striking feature of this model is disclosed at once by this practice in its, substantial pressedsteel frame. Nowhere are the top or bottom flanges • of its eicle-members pierced for holes of any description except at the extreme rear and front ends for the attachment of cross-members. This chassis embodies many interesting and ingenions features, not the least important of which is its change-speed gear, which affords a substantial reduction as between engine and cross-shaft, allows of the differential gear being mounted on the latter, thus reducing its proportions, and of ,large sprocket pinions being used for the final drive, which is effected by means of a pair of roller chains, protected by neat sheetsteel guards.

The boiler feed pump is a separate it mounted on the near side of the chassis, driven through gearing off the engine shaft and provided with a clutch to enable it to be disconnected when not required. The brake gearing is particularly substantial. Both brakes take effect on the rear drums, and are cone pletely enclosed; each is fully cOmpensated.

In the desire to obtain ample strength the need for lightness has not been overlooked, and the cross-members with which the chassis is reinforced are drilled wherever possible to reduce weight. The Garretteis evidently intended to be a one-man-driven machine, the whole of the controls being mounted together, and including change-speed levers, two brake levers bralcepedal and accelerator pedal. The steering gear is of the centrally pivoted Ackerman type. Another exhibit on this stand is a well-finished high-sided lorry on the undertype chassis, built to the order of the manufacturers of Hovis flour.

There are some detail exhibits, inchiding the engine and gearbox unit, feed water heater and super-heater coil. The engine valve-gear chambee is open, and the engine itself equipped with a handle so that it may be rotated and the operation of the valve gear noted.
