Dual-purpose Vans. l0-cwt. and 15-cwt. Box Vans.

STAND No. 37.

FM cars are shown on the Durant, stand, and of these perhaps the most interesting is that fitted with a Duple shooting brake body. In the farm shown this body provides seating accommodation for two people in the. driver's compartment, and in the rear compartment there are two longitudinal seats for four more passengers. The top of the body can be detached, whilst the side curtains and the upper portion of the sides can likewise be removed. An ordinary touring body can then be fitted on top of the remaining structure, so that the car serves a double purpose.

Alternatively, this vehicle can be obtained in a form suitable for use either as a touring car or an enclosed van. The conversion can be very quickly carried out, and the parts are secured so simply that not even a spaener. is required. The iprice is remarkably low, and it can really be said that by buying this vehicle the purchaser is obtaining two cars at the price of one. The touring body is not actually on view on this stand, although the way in which it :5 fitted is fairly clear from an examine

ti on of the ear shown. This touring body can, however, be seen on the stand of Duple Bodies and Motors, Ltd. (No. 17).

Also exhibited on the Durant stand are two smart 10-cwt. box vans, provided with large doors at the rear and two seats in the driver's compartment. These

are mounted on the smaller-sized Durael chassis, whilst the fourth exhibit, which is also a van, is mounted on the larger 24 h.p. chassis, and has a capacity for

15-cwt. loads. This van has an extremely smart appearance, and -is finished green and white. All the chassis follow the well-known Durant practice, each being fitted with a four-cylinder Continental engine,dry-disc clutch and separately mounted three-Speed gearbox. The Durant rear axle is of the threequarter floating type, the final drive

being by spiral bevel. Semi-elliptic springs support the. frame at the front. and rear, the latter being underslung. Both brakes take effect on the rear-wheel drums, consisting of externally contracting bands and internal-expanding shees. The large tubular cross-member, which also serves as a silencer, still constitutes a feature of the Durant chassis.

This. • cross-member is provided to stiffen the frame against cwisi ing effects such as are produced when one wheel sinks into a hollow while another on the same side, of the vehicle rises over an obstruction.
