Internal combustion and Steam Light Locomotives.

• STAND ,No. 69.

rpW0 light locomotives of 60 cm.

gauge (i.e., standard Decauville) are shown on the stand of Baguley Motors, Ltd. One is an internal-combustion type of 25-30 h.p. This has a four-cylinder engine with the cylinders cast in pairs and having a 4-in, bore and 5-in. stroke. It, is geared to give running speeds of 3 m.p.h. and 6 m.p.h. both forward and reverse. The weight in running order is approximately 4 tons. The adhesion is 1,800 lb., and the tractive effort 2,080 lb. on low gear, and 1,040 lb. on high gear.

The power unit is specially designed for heavy commercial purposes, and the average consumption is .75 pint per b.h.p.-hour. Connecting rods are of high. tensilesteel fitted with white-metallined brasses and bronze small-end bushes. Ignition is by H.T. magneto, and lubrication by a mechanical distributor. Cooling is effected by water contained in a large cylindrical tank, which takes the place of the loco boiler in the steam engine, this water being circulated by a rotary pump. Power is transmitted first through bevel wheels, then through spur wheels, and finally by rods direct, to the driving wheels. The changes of gear are effected through a patent double-friction clutch.

The steam locomotive has cylinders of 6 ins, bore and 0 ins, stroke mounted at the front, following ordinary steam locomotive practice, and driving direct to the wheels by rods. The boiler is of the ordinary loco type with a steel firebox and steel tubes. The weight in working order is 54 tons. This little locomotive will haul 125 tons against a rolling resistance of 15 lb. per ton, and 71 tons when the rolling resistance is 25 lb.

Such engines as these are being used to an increasing extent by contractors.
