THE HAULAGE consortium Linq Alliance has announced its first contract, countering fears that little headway has been made since its launch last June.

Chief executive Chris Sturman says the £2m-a-year deal with insulation and plasterboard manufacturer Knauf, which previously used Eddie Stobart, will soon be followed with another £5m worth of business.

"There are another couple of contracts which we are negotiating and I would hope to announce them in July and September," he adds.

The contract with Germanowned Knaufs factories in Queensferry and Hartlepool starts on 14 June. It involves five firms from the 26-member consortium, who are all members of the Transport Association.

Sturman adds: "It's new, it's different but it's something to which all of our members are certainly very committed. Once we have demonstrated what we can do I think we will go off like a rocket."

Two of the original members, Prestons of Potto in North Yorkshire and EM Rogers (Transport) in Northampton left earlier this year.
