Truckzone

There was plenty to smile about at this year's Truckzone, not least the weather.

UNLESSYOU SLAPPED on the factor 30 sun cream, the chances are you left the SED 2004 construction industry show at Milton Keynes looking like a beetroot. Providing limited shade around

the showground were some nifty innovations and sharp demonstrations, as more than 20 companies made their first appearances in the CM-sponsored Truckzone alone. Transport may not be the cen

tre-piece at SED but it's certainly an expanding part of the content. Feedback throughout the Truckzone and from the trailer manufacturers dotted around the site was positive.

How much of that was down to sunstroke is hard to say, but for once the wellies and wet-weather gear remained stowed in the boot of the car. "Gentlemen, start your excavators..."

• Following up the launch of the lightweight Highway tipper range, Renault Trucks UK has introduced a lightweight Kerax muckaway option in the 8x4 line-up. The Kerax 370 8x4 Parabolic weighs in at 9,304kg on a 5m wheelbase chassis, saving approximately 400kg. The 370hp engine is the common rail dCi, while suspension is by parabolic leaf springs on the front axle and the rear bogie. It is fitted with the Global cab option, which eats into the weight-saving somewhat, and a Cyncro steel body.

4 The decision to concentrate on the construction market meant a long overdue UK introduction for the Renault Kerax double drive tractor. The 420.27A with the Global cab turned a few heads. It has the 420 dCi 11.1-litre common-rail six-cylinder engine and 16-speed ZF transmission. It weighs in at 9.2 tonnes with a 3.15m wheelbase, and has a VBG sliding fifth wheel and tipping gear.

• You had to be switched on to find the hidden gem on the Scania stand. The long awaited R-series was hard to find but worth the effort, appearing at the SED show behind the manufacturer's stand attached to the hospitalitytrailer. Pictured is the R420 4x2 sleeper tractor with 3.8m wheelbase. Under the bonnet is the 12-litre 410 HPI engine launched two years ago with the GRS 900 gearbox. While not a dedicated construction vehicle it generated a lot of interest. V Truck-mounted forklift maker Moffett Kooi marked its SED debut by introducing the new M8. It's more ergonomically-friendly for the driver and offers a better lifting to

capacity to body weight ratio than previous designs. The M8 has a composite door, body and dash making it virtually rust-proof. It weighs in at a shade over 2.5 tonnes and has a 2.5 -tonne lifting capacity. The Kubota 50hp diesel engine drives the three-wheel-drive setup — four-way manoeuvrability will be added later.

A The MAN/ERF Group recently announced its intention to pick up valuable market share in the UK construction market. On the stand was the ERF ECL76x4 chassis cab with Wilcox Wilcolite aluminium body. Its kerbweight stands at 8,840kg with 50 litres of fuel and no driver. The engine is MAN's 7-litre DOB at 280hp with the Eaton ninespeed transmission. Peak torque is 1,100Nm between 1,400 and 1,700rpm.

A Isuzu has redesigned the steel body on its Grafter 3.5-tonne tipperto offer an extra 156kg payload. The new design was making its first UK appearance at SED and attracted plenty of interest. Kerb weight is 2,310kg, offering the operator 1,190kg of payload capacity. It will be launched into the UK market at the beginning of June. The version on the stand has the standard 130hp 3-litre diesel engine with five-speed transmission, and is built by VN in Portugal.

A Automatic 4x4 pickups are currently the sole preserve of lsuzu UK and its 3-litre diesel Rodeo Denver. The high transfer ratio of 2.48:1 is combined with a limited slip differential for improving climbs on rough terrain. The four-speed auto box double cab has turned heads in the construction industry. Its 130hp direct injection diesel engine allows a 1,055kg payload and 2,500kg towing weight. As part of its debut at SED, lsuzu UK showed its entire pick-up range.

BMC UK made its debut at SED with the Professional 625 4x2 rigid, available from 1 June. The skip-loader body is built in Turkey by bodybuilders Efe. A 5.5-tonne kerb weight is available on the 4.4m wheelbase. Under the bonnet is the Cummins ISBe 250hp 5.9-litre engine, and nine-speed Eaton gearbox. The truck on the stand is one of two for Waste Away, based in Tamworth and Birmingham.

The veryfirst automatic Mitsubishi Canter 75 made its first UK appearance at SED. The Allison S1000 five-speed box is fitted to a 7.5-tonne seven-seater double-cab chassis carrying a Tipmaster dropside tipper body with mesh cage. Early interest from local authorities has been encouraging. It weighs in at a negligible 50kg more than the manual box version. The diesel engine produces 143hp and 412Nm peak torque.

V Transcover introduced its recently developed 'one stop shop'. It's done in conjunction with four local tipper builders from the North to market products in the SouthEast. The 'It's Your Choice' programme for muckaway bodies includes one-piece floor construction, double skin sides, Domex sides and Hardox floors. On the stand is one of the programme's first products, an Abba Commercials body and Transcover sheeting system on an Actros 3235 8x4 in Robert Body livery.

A Volkswagen took its entire light CV lineup to SED and spent a lot of the time cleaning its vehicles, as it was located opposite and down-wind of the Truckzone demonstration site! The dust-covered Caddy has hit the ground running, and it has been warmly received by the construction industry. On the stand was the 2-litre 69hp SDI with five-speed manual transmission and 140Nm of torque at 2,200rpm.

4 Hymix has launched a versatile mixer with an integral weighing machine to allow specific multi-drop deliveries from one barrel, rather than reloading separately for each trip. The barrel's contents are weighed by a PM On-Board system, which comes with navigation and tracking system, and is accurate to 5kg per tonne. All ancillary equipment except the barrel is clamped to the subframe. It has been developed with Wright MiniMix in Bristol, which took the first four, while six more will be delivered in Hanson livery. Hymix also used the event to demonstrate a forthcoming product. The fully handheld remote control allows the driver to operate

the chute, barrel, auxiliary functions and switch off the engine from up to 200m away. It should be available for trucks between 15 and 32 tonnes when it is launched next year.

A A new one-way tipper has been added to Ford's One-Stop programme. Fitted to the Transit 350 MWB twin-wheel rear drive chassis cab in Leeds City Council colours is an aluminium dropside tipper with a payload of 1,180kg. The tail board is hinged top and bottom, to empty over or through, depending on the type of load. It has a five-stage ram, 2kW power pack and can tip to a maximum of 45°.

A Dealer and body-builder Valley Trucks put the Hino FY2PULA 8x4 tipper on its stand with a Cyncro steel body and Transcover sheet. Under the extended day cab is the 360hp P11C direct injection charge-cooled engine driving through a 16-speed synchromesh gearbox. On the standard wheelbase, the chassis-cab weighs in at 9,160kg.

A Tipper body manufacturer Cyncro debuted at SED with the Rhino line-up but earned the distinction of having more products on other stands than anyone else. For classic and mainstream specifications they were directing people to other stands on site. The range has recently been rationalised so all products have matching side profiles. This single skin Rhinolite body on the Scania P114 6x4 rigid is made of 90% Hardox steel, saving half a tonne, and has a flat floor to the buyer's specification.
