THE VEHICLE and Operator Services Agency has bowed to demands from truck dealers for a thorough investigation into the reliability of its brake testing equipment. This follows numerous complaints by dealers that vehicles would pass roller brake tests in their own workshops only to fail
the same test when carried out at sites operated by VOSA.
In March the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) wrote to VOSA highlighting discrepancies that had been noted by its members (CM 18 March). Frank Parr of the Harris Group told CM that this problem had been reported by all five of
its dealerships in the South-East.
Ian Davis-Knight, head of RMI technical operations, says: "By working with our colleagues at VOSA, we will be able to clear up this conundrum quickly." Roger Trubridge, VOSA's scheme manager for HGV testing, says it is happy to assess its equipment and test procedures
with RMI. However, he asserts that VOSA has complete confidence in its kit: "VOSA believes that the roller brake testers used at goods vehicle test stations accurately measure and record all aspects of brake testing of heavy vehicles."
The results of the investigation are expected at the end of August.
