Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• ExeI Logistics is evaluating a clean-running diesel fuel that is said to produce 20% less NOx than conventional fuel but costs 4p/lit more.

So far Exel is running 25 of its 13-tonners on Greenergy DMF, which is produced by Swedish company Greenergy. Its cetane index has been raised from 49 to 58; particulate emission is reduced by 50% and ash by 60%, says Greenergy.

Andy Owen, managing director of UK subsidiary Greenergy International. says these figures are based on Swedish government data and meet the Swedish standard MI specification.

Exel's vehicles are working on a Boots contract out of the Chester depot: the fuel is also on trial with Peter Lane on its Bodyshop contract and J Sainsbury at its Charlton and Buntingford depots in London.

If the trials are successful Mike Aldridge, Exel director of fleet services, hopes the industry will lobby the Government to press for a tax incentive, similar to that granted to users of unleaded petrol.
