• Volvo has launched a 1310M mid-engined bus chassis 14 years after the original 1310M made its debut.
The latest chassis includes a number of significant engineering changes. The most radical is the re-positioning of the radiator to the nearside of the chassis, close to the engine—following on from the traditional side-mounted installation in the B1013 single deck bus chassis.
The 10-litre Euro-1 TM) 102 engine is rated from 180kW (241hp)-210kW (28211p) in DL and GL versions of the cha, sis. GLE chassis will be fitted with a 250kW (335hp) electronic diesel control (EDC) version of the engine, linked to a Volvo G7 EGS (Easy gearshift system) gearbox.
The EGS box is an option on the lower powered models. Standard gearbox for them is the ZF S6-85 six-speed synchromesh, with single rod linkage for lighter, more positive operation. Its aluminium housing contributes to a weight reduction of 55kg over the unit formerly used. 7E, automatic gearboxes are offered as options on all models.
The new chassis has a wheelbase of 6.2m; 0.2m longer than before. Front overhang has been reduced by 0.2m but the increased wheelbase has provided space for an engine auxiliaries support frame mounted ahead of the power unit. This houses the alternator, hydraulic pump and air conditioning compressor. The spare wheel carrier and batteries are now mounted below the driver's compartment.
Repositioning the radiator gives greater styling freedom to bodybuilders, as shown by the first Plaxton and Van Hoolbodied vehicles.
Volvo Bus is exploring the potential of offering the "Geartronic" gearbox with EDCequipped engines. Operators have been given demonstration drives in the FL10 Gez tractive unit, launched in last month.
